If there is a hound(s) you’re interested in, please complete our application (there is a link at the bottom of this page). We evaluate applications in the order they are received.
NOTE: We make every effort to keep the website up-to-date, but be aware that the specific dog you’re interested may not still be available. In this case we encourage you to consider other hounds listed on our site.

Once we have received your application we will review it and contact you at the e-mail address you provide. Then we work with you to determine if the hound you’re interested in will be a good fit for your situation or suggest ones that might be a better fit. Note that we also require a home visit prior to adoption.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent or legal guardian complete the adoption application with you. We will interview you and your parent or legal guardian during the adoption process.

A fenced in yard is optimal but not required. Many of our dogs would be good fits for apartment living. During the adoption process, we will let you know which of our dogs would be best for your living environment. Note: a beagle must be ON LEASH ONLY if outside but not completely fenced in.

Yes. We require permission to contact your landlord to verify that pets are allowed, and that any required deposits have been made prior to adoption.

Most of our adopters have full-time jobs and must be out of the house for several hours a day. If the dog is kept safely indoors (confined in a crate or room if need be), then leaving your dog at
home alone for up to 8 hours a day is fine.

Our dogs are only adopted out as family pets and/or companions. It is our policy that Hound Rescue dogs are not used as hunting, fighting, or barn animals, or for experimental research.

Within our two week “trial period”, you may return your newly adopted dog to Hound Rescue for a full refund of the fee. After two weeks, you may return your dog to Hound Rescue, without a refund.

Note: If at any time after adoption, you find that you must re-home your dog, contact Hound Rescue immediately (per your adoption contract). Hound Rescue dogs are always considered part of our program and we are here to help you make the best decision possible for you and your dog.

All of our dogs go through general vetting and most are healthy. If one has an issue it is let known up front and is considered during the adoption process.

A Foster provides food and water, indoor shelter, love, and socialization. A Foster will also communicate with Hound Rescue volunteers, provide updates (including photos and/or videos
for website), provides transport to/from adoption events and vet appointments (or coordinate with transportation coordinator, as needed).

Each situation is unique. Some rescued dogs need a foster home for a few short days, others much longer. Hound Rescue will work with you to determine the best match, based on the dog’s needs and your availability.

Fosters generally drive to and from vet visits, adoption events and Adopter meet-and-greets. Hound Rescue’s primary veterinary clinic is in Cedar Park, Texas. The amount of driving necessary is case-by-case, dependent on your location, the location of Hound Rescue adoption events (generally, these are held in the Austin area) and the location of potential Adopters. Hound Rescue is available to help if a transportation issue arises, with adequate notice.

It is important to realize that fostering requires a bit of “trial and error”. A dog’s history and temperament is largely unknown at the time of rescue. If a dog does not fit in with your family or pets, we will work with you to identify another foster family as quickly as possible. If it is possible, we request that you foster until a replacement is found.

Yes, some of our best adoption matches start as Fosters! Please let Hound Rescue know as soon as possible, that you would like to be considered for adoption. We will begin the process right away. Please keep in mind that Hound Rescue is actively searching for an adoptive family for your rescued dog, so the sooner we know you are interested in adopting, the better.

Most Fosters provide food for their foster dog(s), but if you need assistance, please discuss options with Hound Rescue. Other expenses include collars, harnesses, blankets, toys, treats, etc. Hound Rescue can often provide a crate on loan, if needed. If you want to foster but need help with supplies, please do not let finances hinder your decision to foster! Let Hound Rescue know what you can provide, and we will work with you.

As a foster, you will likely be involved in this process (i.e. vet visits). We will work with you to ensure that necessary preventatives and medical care are completed prior to transferring the dog to your care, in consideration of the health and wellbeing of your current pets.

No, Hound Rescue will pay all medical bills for our foster dogs. However, we do require you check with us before making any trips to the vet. We have a relationship with designated clinics that give us "rescue" rates and are familiar with us.

Please check in with Hound Rescue before taking your foster dog to the vet. If it is an emergency and after-hours, we understand it may be necessary to utilize an emergency vet.

Hound Rescue’s primary vet clinic is in Cedar Park, Texas. On occasion, we utilize a few other clinics in Central Texas, as well. It is strongly preferred that our primary clinic is utilized whenever possible for our foster dogs. We do understand that urgent visits and emergencies come up from time to time, so please communicate with Hound Rescue as quickly as possible when you encounter the unexpected.

A good rule of thumb is to feed your foster dog the same food you feed your own dog. Also, keep in mind that dogs coming from a shelter have been fed whatever is on hand, has been donated, etc. The transition to your brand might be a bit hard on the dog’s stomach. It is a good idea to transition with plain boiled chicken and plain rice. (Start with 100% chicken/rice and slowly add new food and decrease chicken/rice over the period of a week or so.) Please ask your contact at Hound Rescue if you would like recommendations on specific options.

Make sure your dogs' vaccinations are up to date and that they are on heartworm-preventative medication. Otherwise, you should be okay! Hound Rescue dogs receive these vaccinations: Bordetella, DHPP and Rabies. They also receive flea, tick and heartworm preventatives.

Basic training is often necessary. Many rescued dogs are not house-trained or crate-trained. If there are dogs in the home already, the process is often easier. Hound Rescue is available to help with training issues that you encounter, including professional training if needed, for particularly challenging issues.

Hound Rescue is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and placement of abandoned dogs in loving homes across Texas. We provide canine health and rescue education to the community.

Hound Rescue:
